Springtime in my hometown was a mixture of weather and school activites, especially when I was in high school. The state basketball tournament was being held at the university arena in my town and in my sophomore and junior years, we won the A division championships. The A division was for the largest high schools in the state.
The weather was so unpredictable at that time of the year. One year, it was about 15 degrees below zero during the tournament. This was during my junior high days. Then, I would walk to the arena to see the games. One day, my friend gave me a ride on his moped and that was the coldest ride I ever took. Sunshine, snow, rain, and sometimes all three during the tournanment week. In my senior year, three friends and I went to Vail Ski Area in Colorado on our sping break. Vail had been open for just a couple of years. Lift tickets were $10 all day and we spent the nights in a hostel for $2 per night and $4 the last night at a different hostel. You took your sleeping bag and they furnished the bed and mattress.
Spring did not show its face too much in March and usually waited til April. Even then, snow was always a possibility and the wet snows were bad for trees that had leaved out, breaking them under the weight of the snow. All in all, when that is what you know growing up, you deal with it and it just seems normal then.

Easter Memories
This time of year brings all sorts of memories to mind of family times together. Preparations were made about food to be served. Was the main course to be fish or country ham or some type of poultry? Pies and cakes were to be baked. Eggs were to be boiled and colored.
Shopping for new clothes was done weeks before the big event. There were new suits for the men and dresses for the women. Easter bonnets or hats and new shoes were purchased.
A few days before Easter, relatives came from far and wide. They gathered at our grandparent's home. Eveyone pitched in to make last-minute preparations.
Easter morning began with a church service at a local church of their choice. Afterwards, everyone gathered at the "old home place." The children were treated to an Easter egg hunt. The women took over the kitchen and dining area to prepare and serve the meal. The men took to the front porch to talk about their lives, work, and politics. Then, the delicious meal was served.
After much food was eaten and much talk completed, we made homemade ice cream on the front porch. The children were given the choice of flavor to be made. My favorite was fresh peach. It was a glorious holiday.
